Interview with John Adams of Melodic Hard Rock Band Love N War

Written by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen for Sin City Presents Magazine

Melodic hard rockers Love N War formed in 2000 in Houston, Texas, released a debut album entitled “Up The Annie,” and are currently recording a follow-up release. They are influenced by bands like UFO, Aerosmith, Dokken, Whitesnake, and Led Zeppelin and are known for their high-energy live stage performance. I caught up with Love N War founding member John Adams to talk about how the band formed, his main influences, some highlights, and their upcoming CD.

ALISON “METALBABE” COHEN: Hi John, I’m happy to be interviewing you for Metal Babe Mayhem! Let’s start by talking about who’s currently in the band and how you came together. I believe that you and Jeff have known each other since the early eighties.

JOHN ADAMS: Yes, me and Jeff have known each other since we got out of school. So there’s me, John Adams on guitar, Jeff VandenBerghe on vocals, Donny Bragg on drums, and Ray Soliz on Bass. Jeff and I started Love N War in 2000. Donny joined in 2004, and Ray joined in 2010.

METAL BABE: You’ve had the current lineup six years and you have opened for quite a few major bands, including Ratt, UFO, Queensryche, Night Ranger, Loudness, MSG, Winger, Y&T, Sebastian Bach, Ace Frehley, and Krokus. Can you tell me a highlight (or two) from those shows?

JOHN: Meeting Michael Schenker! He is the reason I started playing guitar when I was twelve. Also, meeting Mark Storace of Krokus. I have always been a huge Fan!

METAL BABE: What’s the music scene like in Houston? Where do you typically play out?

JOHN: We have a strong scene here. There’s a lot of “Metal Heads” and some great bands in the Houston/Texas areas! There are a number of venues/clubs to play at too. We play wherever can, and we have played most of them!

METAL BABE: I’ve read that Love N War puts on an amazing live show. What can fans expect from a live performance?

JOHN: We definitely put on a high-energy stage show, and we have a few laughs here and there lnw-2-newtoo. (LAUGHS) We just love what we do and Have fun doing it!

METAL BABE: It’s great that you all have fun onstage. It definitely shows! How did you choose to record in Arcadia, Missouri at Endeavor Studios with producer Gregg Gill (former Z-Lot-Z guitarist)?

JOHN: Gregg has been a longtime friend and he recorded our first CD, “Up the Annie,” so it was an easy choice for us. He moved his family to Missouri where he opened Endeavor Studios.

METAL BABE: Very cool. Where are you at in the recording process of your second album?

JOHN: We are almost done! It’s sounding freaking awesome and we can’t wait to release it! We are looking to release our new CD in early 2017.

METAL BABE: Do you have a working title, single, or plans to record a video?

JOHN: We are kicking around some ideas, but nothing is written in stone yet! We are hoping to make a video after it’s released!

METAL BABE: How does the new CD compare to “Up The Annie?”lnw-uta

JOHN: I think it’s heavier, but it is just as melodic. It’s definitely a better CD with stronger songs than we’ve had in the past. We are hoping everyone feels the same way!

METAL BABE: Definitely. I look forward to hearing it. Tell me a little bit about your background and influences as a guitarist.

JOHN: I have been playing guitar since I was twelve. I toured professionally for three years in the late 80’s in a band called WURX, and I started a band called Lestat around 1991. Love N War was formed in 2000 from a reunion of Lestat! My early influences were Michael Schenker, Joe Perry, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, and Randy Rhoads. I have written and played original music from day one.

METAL BABE: Very cool. You played the Sunset Strip with WURX and Lestat too, right? What was that like?

JOHN: Awesome, great times! It was wild… All these band dudes walking around handing out flyers. There was lots of attitude! (LAUGHS) I met a lot of really cool people. It was quite the party!

METAL BABE: I bet! I always wished I could have been on the Strip during that time period. Speaking of good times, have you ever played Vegas? What you can share about it? (And if not, where would you like to play if you could play there?)

JOHN: We have never played there, but I hung out with my friend Paul Chapman (former UFO guitarist) at The Vampire Lounge last summer. I like that place! Hell, I would play anywhere in Vegas! (LAUGHS)

METAL BABE: That’s awesome! Hopefully Love N War gets the opportunity to play Vegas at some point down the line! What last words would you like to say to our readers?

JOHN: Long live rock and roll! Stick to your dreams and live life to its fullest! Find Love N War on FaceBook (Houston, TX.) and hear our CD “Up the Annie” on ReverbNation. New CD to be released early 2017! Peace!

METAL BABE: Thanks John. It’s been great talking to you. I’m definitely looking forward to the new CD. For more information on Love N War, please visit the links below:
