Judge Jackson – Live at The Whisky – May 2nd
Written by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen
Judge Jackson formed in 1995, recently released their sixth CD ‘6,’ and have played an astonishing number of shows. They have actually played over 1,200 shows to date and celebrated their 1000th show at the 27th Laughlin River Run in 2009. Crazy that with that many shows, and their 100-plus gigs a year commitment, that I had never seen them play live before. They have even opened for National touring acts such as Tesla, John Waite, Gov’t Mule, Doobie Brothers, Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, Army of Anyone, and UFO.
When I found out that Judge Jackson was opening for Gilby Clarke (formerly of Guns n’ Roses) on May 2nd, I made sure I got to The Whisky early to catch their entire set. As I waited for them to take the stage, I was proud to hear Slayer playing over the P.A. as a tribute to Jeff Hanneman. (Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, age 49, died from liver failure earlier that day.)
From the minute Judge Jackson hit the stage, until the last note, they filled the night with high-energy rock n’ roll. Their music was catchy, with choruses that stuck in your head and made you want to pump your fist in the air and sing along. They also had a lot of variety to their music. At times their musical style would sound like 80’s arena rock, and then 90’s alternative, and at times… They just jammed.
For the last song of the night Judge Jackson played a Fleetwood Mac song called “Oh Well,” that they stretched out and included a medley of various Led Zeppelin riffs including “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” and “How Many More Times.” The way that vocalist Todd McTavish stepped away from the spotlight during this song and completely lost himself in the moment was simply mystifying. This was definitely a great way to end a fun and rockin’ performance!
