Toronto based sleazy rock n’ roll band Midnight Towers are currently working on their debut EP and have released two singles to date. Lead singer Mark Threat first picked up the mic when he was a teenager and assembled his perfect band with Midnight Towers in late 2014.
ALISON “METALBABE” COHEN: Congratulations on being selected as one of the Featured Bands for The Best Unsigned Rock and Roll Bands in America!
MARK THREAT: Thanks a lot for selecting us. We’re proud to be the first band representing Canada!
METAL BABE: Yes! That’s exciting!! Let’s start off by talking about how the band formed. Midnight Towers has ex-members of quite a few well-known bands, including The Black Halos, The Spitfires, and Kill Cheerleader. How did you all come together?
MARK: In a dream… I’ve been a huge fan of all these bands for years, so it’s still kind of surreal to me. I started shopping the idea of the band around to people I knew I wanted in it in late 2014. I knew of Jay Millette (The Black Halos/The Spitfires) through mutual friends, and even though we’d never met, I knew I had to ask him. We chatted for a bit, shared ideas, and he agreed, which blew my mind. At the same time, I found Danni through an online ad looking for a drummer, and I’m just so glad he didn’t end up being a weirdo who wanted to chop me up.
METAL BABE: Definitely!
MARK: By November 30th, 2014, a full band was assembled and we got started on three songs right away. Tony (Kill Cheerleader/Die Mannequin) joined us after replacing our original bass player in September 2015, which was another mind-blowing experience for me. Kill Cheerleader is one of my favorite bands of all time, I still can’t believe it sometimes.
METAL BABE: That’s so awesome. How do you describe your musical style and who are your main influences?
MARK: We’re a sleazy rock ‘n’ roll band. We get compared to Scandinavian rock ‘n’ roll bands all the time (The Hellacopters, Turbonegro, Backyard Babies) which are all huge compliments. If you take those bands and throw in the Dead Boys, you’ll get the Towers.
METAL BABE: Very cool. You’ve been playing a lot of shows lately. What is the music scene like in Toronto, Canada?
MARK: The music scene is incredibly diverse. Toronto is one of the largest cities in North America, so there’s always lots going on. There are also a lot of really cool rock ‘n’ roll clubs, like the Bovine Sex Club and Cherry Cola’s, so there’s always the opportunity to play for a cool crowd.
METAL BABE: I saw that Midnight Towers played at a tribute for Lemmy at the Silver Dollar on February 11th. How did that go and what type of influence did Lemmy have on you as a musician?
MARK: The show went really well, especially considering it was a school night. People came out on a Thursday, got drunk, and listened to a bunch of bands play Motorhead and Hawkwind songs. We ripped right through “Killers,” “No Class,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and easily got the best reaction of the night. I think Lemmy was such a huge influence on so many musicians because he helped bridge a major gap – the gap between punk and metal – and made the world realize it’s all rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t think we’re a punk band or a metal band – we draw our influences from all over the board – but, like Motorhead, we’re a rock ‘n’ roll band.
METAL BABE: That’s great. Tell me more about your background as a musician. What made you want to pick up the mic in the first place and how long have you been singing?
MARK: My biggest influence is definitely Stiv Bators. Ever since I saw him blow his nose into a piece of bologna and eat it, it was love at first sight. Seriously, he did whatever the f*ck he wanted to and people ate it up because he was so charismatic and so fun to watch. He was also just so great at everything he did – from the Dead Boys to Lords of the New Church to his solo stuff – he was just a natural born rock ‘n’ roller, born to be on stage. I knew I wanted to be a frontman, and a showman, really, because of Stiv. That must’ve been when I was about fourteen or fifteen
METAL BABE: Wow. I need to look that up! You just released “Ride With Me” on Bandcamp, and “Heartbreaker” last November. Where are you at in the recording process, and when do you expect your CD to be released?
MARK: Yeah, we’ve released two singles so far, and they’ve both been getting incredible attention. After we released “Heartbreaker,” we got an offer to put out a single with Yeah Right! Records, which will be available later this summer. Then we released “Ride With Me” and got another offer to put out another release. The details of that will be announced in the near future.
METAL BABE: Very cool. I definitely dig the first two songs. Looks like you’ve recorded with some special guests, including Emily (The Anti-Queens) and Val (The Anti-Queens/Black Cat Attack). What can fans expect from the CD?
MARK: Yeah, Emily and Valerie came in and blew us away with guest vocals on “Crazy For You,” which will actually be on our first release with Yeah Right! People can expect a lot of fast-paced, sleazy rock ‘n’ roll. No bullsh*t.
METAL BABE: Will you be doing any videos?
MARK: We’ll definitely be doing a bunch of videos. At the moment, we’re focused on releasing our debut EP’S, but we’ll be getting some videos going soon. For now, you can check out some live videos on YouTube.
METAL BABE: Great. Do you have plans to tour outside of the Toronto area or any U.S. dates in the works?
MARK: We’re always planning to play as much as possible in as many cities as possible. We’ve already gotten quite a few show offers in the U.S., but I’d like to do a bit of Canada first. We’ll be doing a bunch of Ontario and Quebec dates this summer.
METAL BABE: Keep us posted if you make it to L.A. for a show! Anything you would like to say to your fans?
MARK: Thank you, thank you, thank you! We appreciate and love all of the support, and we couldn’t have done it without you. It’s a great feeling to know that rock ‘n’ roll is alive and well.
METAL BABE: I agree! Thank you for taking the time for the interview Mark! I’m looking forward to the new EP.
