Crack in the Shell – ‘After Life’
Written by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen
The variety that Crack in the Shell (CITS) has, both vocally and musically, absolutely astonishes me. They released a seven song EP titled ‘Afterlife’ this April, which was a follow-up to their 2012 debut ‘Harder.’
The CD starts with the title track, which could almost pass for new wave or even goth rock. It is a fun, catchy song that makes you want to get up and dance. Speaking of dancing, the surprise track on the CD, and only cover song, is by none other than the one and only Lady Gaga!
Crack in the Shell covers her International hit “Bad Romance,” which peaked at number two in the United States. It was definitely a bold step for them to cover the song‚ and something completely out of their wheelhouse, but they did it really well. The 3rd song of the CD, “Gloria,” takes a step in an entirely different direction. “Gloria,” is very Queensryche-ish. Geoff Tate himself would be impressed with the vocals on the song. And maybe he was? CITS did open for Geoff Tate at the Canyon club on August 3rd.
The band really has been making a name for themselves. They have played some great shows in the Los Angeles area, including Gin Blossoms, Winery Dogs, Don Dokken, Bret Michaels, and Geoff Tate, and they are opening for Lou Gramm from Foreigner on October 17th at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.
The 4th track, “Got to Make You Love Me,” has a really funky vibe to it. “Way Too High” has great lyrical content and catchy guitar riffs. The closest thing that the band has to a ballad is the last track, an acoustic song entitled “Harder.” “Harder,” which was originally released on their debut CD of the same name, is another song that has meaningful lyrics. It is about the trials and tribulations of every day life and how it gets harder and harder just to get by.
“After Life” a great CD, that showcases each individual musicians talent and their ability to play a varity of different styles. I look forward to seeing more CITS live shows and to their upcoming EP, due out by the end of the year. (They plan to release two EP’s a year.) If I had to choose my top two favorite songs. they would be “After Life” and “Gloria.” I see big things happening for Crack in the Shell in the very near future. Make sure to keep an eye out for them, and visit their links below for merchandise, news, and upcoming shows.
